A union that reflects its membership

The UNISON year runs from spring to spring, with our New Year marked by the branch annual general meeting. The AGM is your opportunity to find out more about your branch, to re-elect your representatives and reflect on what your union has achieved. One of the key goals for Southampton District branch is to ensure that union officers represent the make-up of the union’s membership. In particular, this means ensuring that in a union with over two thirds women members, their voices are heard within the local union structure.

Branch secretary Hayley Garner explained:

It’s vital that our leadership reflects our membership. There is no real substitute for understanding the issues faced by our women members – and especially our low paid women members – than ensuring our representatives have that lived experience.
