UNISON Southampton District Branch are proud to recognise Mary Radford, steward at Ludlow Junior School as our STAR Steward for September 2017.
Mary has recently retired after 15 years of dedicated support for her colleagues and the branch.
Branch Secretary, Hayley Garner said:
“Mary has been proactive at Ludlow Junior School, recruiting new members, liaising with the branch and making sure her members know their rights at work. Mary is an example of the difference a trained and active steward can make to a workplace. We would like to wish Mary all the best in her retirement and this award is in recognition of all the hard work she has put in over the years.”
Mary, on receiving the award, said:
"Initially I just thought I could manage being a workplace contact, that seemed less scary. Over time I learnt that I could overcome my timidity and still say my piece.
A steward can alleviate a lot of anxieties for members at an informal level. By offering a listening ear they can offer guidance in helping people understand their employment rights. But they are also important in enabling members to empower themselves in their knowledge of these rights."
